What a same-day date app has to get right — and how 2NIGHT does it

A same-day date is a plan with a hard deadline: it has to be agreed, travelled to and enjoyed before the night ends. That constraint is why most dating apps are bad at it, and it is the design brief 2NIGHT was written against. Below is what the app actually does, feature by feature, with the limits stated plainly.

The three problems of a same-day date

• Time. Both people need to be free in the same window. In most apps that is discovered by asking, days after matching.
• Distance. A same-day date has a travel budget of minutes, not hours. “Within 100 miles” is meaningless at 8 pm.
• Intent. A drink, dinner, a gig, a walk — the plan is easier to say yes to when it is specific.

Time: the “Tonight” status

2NIGHT uses a radius around your location and a nightly “Tonight” status that expires at 5 AM; your profile only appears in the feed while you are live, next to other people who are out that night.

On 2NIGHT you are not browsing a permanent catalogue of profiles. You go live, and your status has an expiry the server enforces. “Tonight” runs until the next 5 AM, when the nightly cleanup removes every stale status and the feed resets. That is the real deadline the countdown in the app points to, and the “Tonight ends in…” cue only appears in the final three hours, when it is genuinely true. A 24-hour option exists, and a separate “Stay discoverable” control offers 3 days, 1 week or always-on for quieter cities and travellers — intentionally kept apart from the nightly choice so the “out tonight” count means what it says.

If you have not set a status, you are not in anybody's feed. You can still look, but a gold banner tells you that you are invisible until you go live. “Hide me” removes you instantly.

Distance: a radius with a real ceiling

The filter sheet has a max-distance slider from 1 km up to your tier's cap — 5 km on the free Silver tier, 15 km on Gold, 50 km on Platinum Black. The feed is centred on your current location, or on any city you pick with Travel Mode (a Gold and Platinum Black feature). Other members only ever receive a rounded distance in kilometres; coordinates are never shared, and a stored location is snapped to the city centre after about 30 days of inactivity.

Intent: categories and a one-line status

Going live asks what you are up for tonight — drinks, food, rooftop, music, culture, sports, games, nightlife, talk, coffee, walk or network — and whether you are open to dating, friends, both, or networking. You can add one line of text. Bios are capped at 150 characters and profiles carry up to six photos. Everything is built to be read in seconds by someone deciding whether to ping you before the bar fills up.

From match to meeting

Ping the people you would like to meet (swipe up) or pass (swipe down). A mutual ping is a match and opens a chat. The chat stays open for 48 hours; Gold and Platinum Black can relaunch an expired one. Free members have a nightly allowance of pings; paid members ping without limits and get a weekly Boost and, on Platinum Black, priority placement in the feed.

Two features exist specifically to shorten the distance between “matched” and “there”:

• Plans. Post where you will be and when; people nearby can join. It turns a same-day date into a same-day gathering when that is easier.
• Two-minute video call. Peer-to-peer, never routed through our servers, free for everyone during launch. Thirty seconds of video answers the question a hundred messages cannot.

The honest limits

2NIGHT does not check identities, does not run background checks and has no verification badge. It does not read your chats and does not scan them for abuse; there is a check for phone numbers, social handles and links, but that is a membership rule about when contact details can be exchanged (free members cannot drop them into chat), not a safety filter. Reporting is how bad behaviour is caught: tap the shield on a profile, or use the ⋯ menu in a chat, pick one of three reasons, and a person reads it — usually within 24 hours, always within 72. Blocking is instant, silent and works both ways, and can be undone under Settings → Safety & privacy.
