Weekends bring visitors into the old city and locals out into their own barris, and the timetable shifts later still. A Saturday in Barcelona often means dinner at 10:30, a bar at 12:30 and a decision about a club at 2:30, which is when most bars are required to close. If you are staying near the Rambla or the beach, go live from there by all means, but a status line that says “Gràcia, drinks from 11” will pull replies from people who live the city rather than pass through it.

• 15 km and 50 km (Gold, Platinum Black): L'Hospitalet, Badalona, Sant Cugat and the rest of the metropolitan area, then the coast in both directions. For people living outside the city and for very quiet nights.

Metro until midnight, until two, or all night

Barcelona's metro has three timetables and it is worth knowing them. Sunday to Thursday the last trains run around midnight. On Fridays and the eves of public holidays it runs until about 2 am. On Saturday night it runs all night. After the metro stops, the NitBus night buses run across the city from Plaça de Catalunya and along the main avenues, taxis are plentiful and the Bicing bikes are there if you are steady enough. Practically: on a weeknight, the midnight cut-off is early for a city that eats at ten, so agree a place you can both walk or bus home from and let the night run past the last train on foot; on Saturday the timetable is not a constraint at all.

Weeknight versus weekend on 2NIGHT

The “Tonight” status expires at 5 AM, which in Barcelona is when the last clubs are emptying, and the chat window lasts 48 hours. On a weeknight, go live around 8 with a category (drinks, food, walk, talk, rooftop) and a status that names the barri; pings between 8 and 11 are the ones that turn into a table.
