Tonight in Berlin: a one-night dating app for a city with no closing time

Mitte has bars too, but it is where visitors stay rather than where Berliners go out. A Tuesday runs from about 8 pm to 1 or 2; a beer from a Späti on a bench by the canal is as legitimate a plan as any bar.

Weekends are a different animal. Clubs open late and run through the morning, the crowd moves toward the Spree around Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, and it is normal to leave home at midnight. Radius settings that make sense in Berlin

2NIGHT uses a radius around your location and a nightly “Tonight” status that expires at 5 AM; your profile only appears in the feed while you are live, next to other people who are out that night. The max-distance slider starts at 1 km and is capped at 5 km on the free Silver tier, 15 km on Gold and 50 km on Platinum Black. In Berlin:

• 1–3 km: one Kiez and its neighbours. From Kottbusser Tor that is most of Kreuzberg and north Neukölln, walkable or one U-Bahn stop; from Boxhagener Platz it is Friedrichshain and the river.
• 5 km (Silver cap): Kreuzberg, Neukölln, Friedrichshain and Mitte together, or Prenzlauer Berg with Mitte and Wedding. This is the weeknight setting: every match is one direct train away.
• 15 km (Gold): everything inside the Ringbahn and a good way beyond, including Charlottenburg and Schöneberg from the east. Useful on a slow Monday or if you live outside the ring.
• 50 km (Platinum Black): the whole of Berlin and Potsdam. It is there for people outside the city and for very quiet nights.

Name the Kiez in your status line. “Neukölln, free from 9” does more work in Berlin than in any other city on this list, because the neighbourhood tells people what kind of night you mean.

Trains all night at the weekend, night buses in the week

Berlin's transport is built for its nightlife. On Friday and Saturday nights the U-Bahn and S-Bahn run through the night, roughly every fifteen minutes, so a weekend match across the city is genuinely reachable at 3 am. On Sunday to Thursday nights most U-Bahn lines stop around 1 am and are replaced by night buses that follow the same routes, while the Metro tram and bus lines keep running around the clock. Taxis and app cars are easy to find. Practically: on a weeknight, meet in the Kiez where one of you already is and let the last U-Bahn be the end; at the weekend the trains remove the deadline, and the only limit is the 5 AM reset of your “Tonight” status.

Weeknight versus weekend on 2NIGHT

The “Tonight” status expires at 5 AM and the chat window lasts 48 hours, which suits Berlin's two speeds. On a weeknight, go live around 7 or 8 with a category and a status that names the Kiez, and ping early; the useful window closes around midnight. At the weekend, later is fine, and a Plan (“canal in Kreuzberg from 10, bring a drink”) is often the most Berlin way to meet: low key, open, no pressure. If your Friday match did not happen because the night went elsewhere, the 48-hour chat is still open on Saturday.

Safety on a same-night date in Berlin
