Tonight in Lisbon: a one-night dating app for a city of seven hills

On weeknights that mostly means Bairro Alto, where the bars spill onto the narrow streets until about 2 am; Cais do Sodré below it, which takes over when Bairro Alto closes; Príncipe Real and Chiado for something calmer; and, increasingly, the neighbourhoods along the Avenida Almirante Reis, Intendente, Anjos and Arroios, where the crowd is younger and more local. Santos and Alcântara toward the river to the west have their own bars and later clubs; Alfama and Graça are for a quieter glass with a view.

Weekends are later and louder. Bairro Alto fills with visitors, locals move to Cais do Sodré, Santos and the riverside clubs, and Marvila to the east has a scene of its own. A Saturday in Lisbon can mean dinner at 10, Bairro Alto until 2, Cais do Sodré until 4 and a club until dawn. If you are staying in Baixa or Chiado you are already in the middle of it; a status line that says “Anjos, drinks from 10” will reach the people who live here rather than the ones passing through.

The city itself is about 100 square kilometres, with the Tagus along its southern edge and the hills doing the rest. Baixa to Príncipe Real is under 2 km on the map and a real climb on foot; the elevators and funiculars help, and the number 28 tram is charming and slow.

Radius settings that make sense in Lisbon

The max-distance slider starts at 1 km and is capped at 5 km on the free Silver tier, 15 km on Gold and 50 km on Platinum Black. In Lisbon:

• 1–2 km: the whole of the historic centre. From Chiado that reaches Bairro Alto, Cais do Sodré, Príncipe Real, Baixa and the foot of Alfama. This is the setting most people will want; everything is a walk, if a steep one.
• 3 km: adds Anjos, Intendente, Santos, Graça and Estrela. Still a short taxi or one metro ride.
• 5 km (Silver cap): nearly the whole city from Belém to Marvila and up to Campo Grande. The free tier already covers the Lisbon people go out in.
• 15 km and 50 km (Gold, Platinum Black): Cascais, Sintra, Almada across the river and the rest of the metropolitan area, then the coast. For people living outside the city and for quiet nights.

Keep the radius small and lead with the neighbourhood. Because the hills make distances misleading, “near Cais do Sodré” is more useful to a match than any number of kilometres.

Last metro, night buses and the hills

Lisbon's metro runs until about 1 am every night of the week, which is early for a city whose bars are only getting going at midnight. After that there are night buses on the main routes, taxis, and the app cars that most people actually use at 3 am, which are easy to find in the centre. Trams stop earlier than the metro. The other transport reality is gravity: a bar “ten minutes away” on the map may be uphill on cobbles, so agree on a meeting point at the same level as where you both are, or near a metro station. Practically: on a weeknight, let the last metro set the end of the evening if you live outside the centre; at the weekend, plan on a taxi and pick a place you can find your own way home from.

Weeknight versus weekend on 2NIGHT

The “Tonight” status expires at 5 AM, which in Lisbon is when the last clubs on the river close, and the chat window lasts 48 hours. On a weeknight, go live around 8 with a category (drinks, food, walk, talk, rooftop) and a status that names the bairro; pings between 8 and 11 are the ones that become a table. At the weekend, going live late is normal, the feed leans toward nightlife and music after midnight, and a Plan (“miradouro in Graça at sunset, then drinks, come along”) is a very Lisbon way to bring a few people together. If a Friday ping did not become a meeting, the chat is still open on Saturday.
