How a night out works in Los Angeles

The LA evening runs early. Happy hours start at 4 or 5, dinner is at 7 or 8, and the bars are at their fullest between 9 and midnight. California law stops alcohol service at 2 am, and last call comes around half past one, so even a Saturday has a hard edge that New York and Berlin do not. Weeknights are shorter still: a Tuesday is dinner and a drink and home by 11, partly because so many people drive.

Where people go is a matter of which side of the city they live on. The Eastside cluster is Silver Lake, Echo Park, Los Feliz and, further out, Highland Park, with bars along Sunset and Hollywood boulevards and a crowd that walks between them. Downtown has its own scene, densest in the Arts District and around the historic core, and Koreatown, between Downtown and Hollywood, is the city's late-food capital with bars to match. Hollywood and West Hollywood do the club and cocktail end of things, with West Hollywood the centre of LGBTQ nightlife. The Westside is Venice, Santa Monica and Culver City, earlier and more relaxed, near the beach. On a weeknight people stay in their own cluster; at weekends they might cross town once, and plan the night around it.

The scale is the point. The City of Los Angeles alone is about 1,300 square kilometres, Downtown to Santa Monica is roughly 25 km, and the county is far larger. A 5 km circle here is one neighbourhood cluster and nothing else.

Radius settings that make sense in Los Angeles

2NIGHT uses a radius around your location and a nightly “Tonight” status that expires at 5 AM; your profile only appears in the feed while you are live, next to other people who are out that night. The max-distance slider starts at 1 km and is capped at 5 km on the free Silver tier, 15 km on Gold and 50 km on Platinum Black. In Los Angeles:

• 1–3 km: a walkable stretch of one neighbourhood: Silver Lake and Echo Park together, or the Arts District and the historic core Downtown, or Abbot Kinney and the Venice boardwalk.
• 5 km (Silver cap): one full cluster. From Silver Lake that reaches Los Feliz, Echo Park and the edge of Hollywood and Koreatown; from Venice it covers Santa Monica and part of Culver City. This is the weeknight setting, and on the free tier it is the ceiling.
• 15 km (Gold): the Eastside, Downtown, Koreatown, Hollywood and West Hollywood in one circle, or the whole Westside from another. Useful on quiet nights and on Fridays when you would drive once for the right plan; a 15 km match can still be forty minutes in traffic.
• 50 km (Platinum Black): most of the LA basin, from the Valley to Long Beach and Pasadena to the beach. It is there for people in the suburbs and for very quiet nights, not for a Thursday in Silver Lake.

Name the cluster in your status line. “Eastside, free from 8” and “Westside, near the beach” are the two most useful words on any LA profile, because they tell a match whether the drive is realistic.

Cars, rideshare and the last train

Los Angeles has a Metro rail system, and it is more useful for a night out than its reputation suggests: the B line links Downtown, Koreatown and Hollywood to North Hollywood, and the E line runs from Downtown to Santa Monica, with last trains around midnight to 1 am depending on the line and the night. But the honest transport reality is that most people drive or take an app car, and that shapes the evening. Whoever drives is not drinking much; whoever does not drive is paying for a ride at 1:30 am when demand peaks. Practically: meet somewhere in your own cluster, near a rail stop if you can, agree on how each of you is getting home before you leave, and never treat a lift from someone you met an hour ago as the plan.

Weeknight versus weekend on 2NIGHT

The “Tonight” status expires at 5 AM, well after the 2 am cut-off, and the chat window lasts 48 hours. On a weeknight, go live around 5 or 6 with a category (drinks, food, walk, talk, coffee) and a status that names your cluster; pings sent before 8 are the ones that become a table before people head home. At the weekend, the feed leans toward nightlife and music from 10, and a Plan (“patio in Highland Park from 8, come by”) works well in a city where people prefer to drive once to a known place. If a Thursday match was on the wrong side of town, the 48-hour chat gives you Friday to meet halfway.
