Tonight in Paris: a one-night dating app for a city you can cross on foot

How a night out works in Paris

The Paris evening runs on the apéro. From about 6:30 pm the terraces fill up with people who have not yet decided what the night is; dinner comes late, around 8:30 or 9, and the bars are at their fullest between 10 and 1. Most bars close around 2 am, which is also when the last metro has gone on a weeknight, so the shape of a Tuesday is apéro, dinner, one more drink, last train. Friday and Saturday nights push later: the metro runs an hour longer, clubs open after the bars, and Pigalle or Bastille can carry you past 4.

Where people go is remarkably stable. On weeknights the crowd is in Oberkampf and along rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud, in the Marais, around Canal Saint-Martin and République, and in the Latin Quarter and Saint-Germain on the left bank. At weekends the map tilts north and east: South Pigalle and Montmartre, Belleville and Ménilmontant, Bastille and the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the Butte-aux-Cailles in the 13th, Batignolles in the 17th. The western arrondissements are quieter at night and the business district at La Défense empties after 8. If you are staying near the Louvre or the Opéra, going live from there is fine, but a 2 km status line that says “Marais, free from 9” will get you more replies than the neighbourhood you are sleeping in.

Radius settings that make sense in Paris

2NIGHT uses a radius around your location and a nightly “Tonight” status that expires at 5 AM; your profile only appears in the feed while you are live, next to other people who are out that night. The max-distance slider starts at 1 km and is capped at 5 km on the free Silver tier, 15 km on Gold and 50 km on Platinum Black. Paris is compact enough that those caps mean something different from London or Los Angeles:

• 1–2 km: a neighbourhood and its neighbours. From République that is the Marais, Canal Saint-Martin, Oberkampf and the edge of Belleville, all on foot.
• 3 km: most of the right-bank nightlife in one circle. This is the setting most people will want on a Thursday: every match is a walk or two metro stops away.
• 5 km (Silver cap): almost all of Paris intra-muros. From Châtelet the périphérique is about 5 km away in most directions, so the free tier already covers the whole city; the extra reach of Gold and Platinum Black is for the near suburbs.
• 15 km and 50 km (Gold, Platinum Black): the petite couronne, then most of the Île-de-France. Useful if you live in Montreuil, Saint-Ouen, Boulogne or further out and want to see the city's feed, or on a quiet Sunday.

Because the city is small, the honest advice is to keep the radius tight and the status line specific. Paris rewards “near Pigalle, drinks from 10” far more than a wide circle.

Last metro, Noctilien and getting home

The metro is the clock of the Paris night. On Sunday to Thursday the last trains leave the centre a little after midnight to around 1 am; on Friday and Saturday nights and before public holidays they run about an hour later, to around 2. The RER lines to the suburbs stop earlier than the metro, which matters if your match lives outside the périphérique. After that there are the Noctilien night buses, which run all night on the main axes from the big stations, the Vélib' bikes if you are sober enough to use them, and taxis and app cars, which get scarce at 2 am on a Saturday. Practically: on a weeknight, pick a place near a metro line that serves both of you, and let the last train set the natural end; at the weekend the extra hour is exactly the hour in which most spontaneous plans happen.

Weeknight versus weekend on 2NIGHT

The “Tonight” status expires at 5 AM, and chats last 48 hours. On a weeknight, go live at apéro time with a category (drinks, food, walk, talk) and a status that names an area; pings sent between 7 and 10 are the ones that turn into a table. At weekends, later is better, and the feed leans toward nightlife and music after midnight. A Plan is a good fit for Paris: “terrace at Canal Saint-Martin from 8, come say bonjour” is low pressure and brings a couple of people together.

Safety on a same-night date in Paris
